This past weekend, Boston’s Ocean Club opened it’s doors for the summer with an inaugural weekend lineup filled with some of the world’s top dj’s. Being a huge fan of both the club itself and the artists performing I attended all but Saturday’s show of Quintino and R3hab due to a prior commitment. As for the rest of the shows…
Knife Party (5/23/13)
5 P.M.: I’m leaving work, about an hour away from my friends and my meeting spot when they text me ::dude, it’s gonna pour tonight, I don’t think we should go::
6 P.M.: I’m given essentially a third grade science project breakdown with print-outs of the doppler radar showing how it’s going to rain harder than we’ve ever seen before and thusly seeing Knife Party is not a good idea.
7 P.M.: Drive around in search of food, still arguing about going or not going to Knife Party. Mind you, the club is no more than 20 minutes from our current location at all times.
8 P.M.: After silently scarfing food and watching the Bruin’s game, we decide to go.<
11 P.M.: Being the least coordinated group possible, we make it to Ocean Club finally in time to get a fair viewing/dancing spot for Knife Party.
The Show: Opening with Power Glove and keeping the party going till close, Knife Party pleased the packed crowd of soaked fans for an hour and a half (ya, I forgot to mention the doppler was right and my friends have let me know it). Besides playing their new Haunted House EP and the eternally overplayed Internet Friends, the duo dropped a trap remix of Daft Punks Get Lucky, a quick ode to the weekends closer Armin Van Buuren, and of course made the crowd go wild to Centipede. Well worth the soaked jeans and button down I dredged out of the club wearing.
Steve Aoki (5/24/13)
7 P.M.: Even a freshly grilled steak isn’t convincing me to want to move in the slightest. The previous night has just worn me down. Contemplating sleeping and not seeing Steve.
9 P.M.: A Dos Equis or two later and I’d smack the 7 P.M. me if I had a chance to and get ready to go get a champagne shower.
11 P.M.: Don’t think there’s a better time to get this club if you’re going for the headliner. Perfect post up, get a drink and be ready amount of time.
The Show: What can I say, Steve’s the man. Night in and night out he puts out the most energy I’ve ever seen at a show and I don’t know how he does it. Blasting hits of his like Turbulence as he showers the crowd with champagne would get old you’d think. Yet there’s Steve with that same grin on his face every night he does it. It was a fitting illusion to the crowd who much like Knife Party the night before were drenched from the rain. Or was it champagne? Aoki proves that if a 35 year old man can crowd surf in a raft and throw cake in your face, we don’t ever have to grow up.
Armin Van Buuren (5/26/13)
10 A.M.: Is it time for Armin yet?
3 P.M.: Is it time for Armin yet?
8 P.M.: Armin should be going on in about the same amount of time it would take me to watch The Great Gatsby right now.
10:45 P.M.: A group of my friends and I arrive slightly earlier due to the fact that Armin’s not only sold out at the box office, but every ticket from Stub Hub was bought as well.
The Show: Imagine if you could see magic, put it in a bottle, and then share that bottle with your best friends. That’s what Armin’s show was like. This was the final stop on not only Armin’s Intense album tour, but of a three show day which started in Atlantic City, migrated to EDC Chicago, and finished at Ocean Club in Boston. He played his album in it’s entirety with the biggest reactions from Alone and Trevor Guthrie’s appearance to sing This is What it Feels Like twice. The ocean’s breeze chilled us all as we left the club that night. A fitting end to a monumental opening weekend in Boston.
