One of the most coveted nights in the Music Industry saw a return to glory for the lords of dance music, Daft Punk. They won a Grammy for Best Pop Duo/ Group Performance with Pharrell Williams’ hat and Nile Rodgers for ‘Get Lucky’, Best Dance Electronica Album, Best Engineered Album, Record Of The Year and the highly sought after Album Of The Year. While people will debate about these awards for the next week, the proof is in the pudding: Daft Punk has helped propel the current wave of dance music into the mainstream. The culmination of their journey was seen in their ‘Album Of The Year’ win where they beat out the likes of Taylor Swift’s Red and Kendrick Lamar’s Good Kid, M.A.A.D City.
But the real gem of the night was their live performance with Stevie Wonder, Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers. Everyone in the crowd knew that something special was going to happen, as it marked the first time the pair had performed live in six years. The funk and soul was evident in the entire performance, only the second time Daft Punk has performed on live TV. While this is a huge step forward for Daft Punk, this is a giant leap forward for the future of electronic dance music and goes to prove that we are more than ‘just a fad’.
