It’s been a while since we’ve heard a major development from the deadmau5 camp. Since the unveiling of his dome stage, things have been relative quiet in the land of Joel Zimmerman. As it turns out, something major was going on behind the scenes and we are just now seeing the result. deadmau5 is leaving Universal‘s Astralwerks and bringing his recordings, publishings, and Mau5trap lable to Kobalt. Kobalt is an independent publishing platform that works with Skrillex, Dave Grohl, and Trent Reznor.

deadmau5 had a very public split with Ultra Records several years back, and moved to Universal’s Astralwerks. Astralwerks released the mau5′ most recent album, but since that time deadmau5 has complained about a lack of transparency from the label. He was especially irked by the inclusion of his tracks on compilations like Now That’s What I Call EDM. The deal with Koboalt aims to replicate what a major label would offer in terms of services and promotion. Kobalt is also very flexible with Joel’s interest in technologies like Twitch and his live streaming site. Kobalt will allow deadmau5 to release music in any form he desires, which should be interesting to say the least. He reports that he has $130 million in the bank and tons of ideas for evolutionary technologies. Things are about to get very exciting for deadmau5 and we can’t wait to see what he’s got up his sleeve.
