Maceo Plex – Mutant Romance EP
Maceo Plex is at it again with his newest EP release, ‘Mutant Romance’. Out on his new MPLX imprint, it features two new productions that showcase his versatility as a producer: ‘Mutant Romance‘ and ‘Mutant Quazars.’
‘Mutant Romance‘ starts off slow, with drum kicks in the background. A grooving rhythm lays the foundation for a most euphoric and emotive melody. Soon, you’ll find it building as cosmic sounding stabs pierce through a resounding bass. There’s an introspective and abstract electro feel to it as the chord progressions pace the track. It’s six minutes worth of an eargasm you must enjoy. Around minute four when the track quiets, the vibrant and virtuous breakdown comes in again and takes you to the end.
‘Mutant Quazars‘ is the second track. It starts out with an energetic build-up, gearing towards a surprising peak. Lush pads, enigmatic melodies, and an unforgiving beat draw the listener closer.
For those that know the house music world – and even those who don’t – Maceo Plex, aka Eric Estornel, is an icon among the rest. He started DJing in 1993 and has come a long way since then. He never wavers from constant momentum. He’s explored different avenues of techno, electro, and everything in between the cracks.
MPLX is a vehicle for experimentation for an established voice in the electronic community – one that’s constantly looking at new ways to express the medium of dance music to its wider and more power potential. It’s a “vehicle for personal experimentation”, which solidifies the Barcelona producer’s ethos on the label’s first release. We can see the stretch in aural identity with this new material. It’s a double dose of soulful, dancefloor bangers that will last us a long time after first hearing them.
