Battery life is arguably one of the most important features we look for when buying a new phone. Sure, many tech companies advertise all day battery life but most of us rigorously use our phones. Whether it’s taking photos and videos at festivals or streaming media on the go, there’s never such thing as too much battery life. Luckily for us, there’s a new rumor that Samsung may be working on a brand new battery.
Reporter Evan Blass on Twitter, believes Samsung may be working on a graphene battery. Compared to ordinary lithium-ion batteries, graphene batteries are reported to be more efficient and charge at faster speeds. Additionally, many graphene batteries are lighter, which could save room and weight in our pockets.
“Samsung is hoping to have at least one handset either next year or in 2021, I’m told, which will feature a graphene battery instead. Capable of a full charge in under a half-hour, they still need to raise capacities while lowering costs.”
We’re not exactly sure how long this type of battery will last of the course of a day but it’s said that the graphene battery can take a full charge in under 30 minutes. Yes, we have ‘fast charging’ today but it’s still not as efficient as most of would like. For example, new iPhones capable of fast charging, can charge up to 50% in 30 minutes. Imagine being able to charge your phone from 0% to 100% in less than 30 minutes!
As tweeted by Blass, if Samsung is working on this technology, we won’t see it until next year or 2021. Samsung has not made any official confirmation on the claim as of now. It wouldn’t be surprising competitors like Apple, are also working on similar technology, In order for a successful transition from lithium-ion batteries to graphene, companies will need to keep it affordable.
