So you think surround sound is good? Dolby 4.1? Well, maybe try Sony 360 Reality Audio technology. Sony is launching a new 360 reality audio technology this fall. The experience is as real as if you are there at a live concert or with the artist recording in a studio. With 360 Reality Audio, the way you experience music listening will be changed forever.

So what exactly is 360 Reality Audio? Using Sony’s object based spatial audio technology, 360 audio is putting sounds in a 360 spherical sound field. This is including anything from bass, piano and even the audience. Listeners will be put into a field of sound exactly as intended by artists and creators. While the library for 360 Reality Audio continues to grow (currently at around 1000 songs), Sony is working with a variety of partners including Deezer, Nugs and Tidal.

Tapas Roy, Amazons head of engineering for the Echo studio said good things about this new technology:

“The first time we heard a demo [of 360 Reality Audio], we were very impressed…it was truly immersive, with music coming from every direction. And we we realized it was replaying the intent that content creators had.”

This new surround sound music format will be coming to iOS and Android mobile devices as well as the Amazon Echo Studio smart speaker in late fall.

With an experience more immersive than standard stereo, 360 Reality Audio is pushing the boundaries of the listening experience. The 360 Reality Audio format was developed with Fraunhofer IIS (the inventor of MP3) and is also compatible with the MPEG-H 3D Audio format. Stay tuned for more updates regarding this exciting technology.
