Airbnb is a great alternative for those attending festivals and events, especially when hotels sell out. One can usually find a property in a great location, for a decent price to share with both small and large groups. Unfortunately, the company is cracking down on “party houses” after a tragic event this past Halloween. From here on out, party houses will not be permitted at any of their properties.
Halloween is a fun time for people of all ages to dress up and get together with friends and family. According to recent reports, one Halloween party in California ended in gunfire, resulting in three deaths. The party took place at an Airbnb property in Orinda, CA with around 100 people in attendance. Two individuals died on the scene while another died at the hospital.

Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky quickly addressed the tragic event, ultimately banning party houses at all Airbnb properties. Anyone violating this policy will be banned from the site entirely. Visibly frustrated, Chesky went to Twitter to share what will be done to prevent another tragic event. For example, an expanded user screening along with a “party house rapid response team” will be implemented ASAP.
While new policies being set in place, we know it will be difficult to ensure guests follow the new guidelines. Monitoring millions of properties across the world will prove to be a challenge but necessary to ensure a safe environment.
