If you’re a YouTube content creator or even just a viewer, you’re most likely aware of copyright strikes that creators try to avoid. YouTube has implemented very strict copyright policies that allow for music right holders to report a video for copyright infringement when their music is used for their own monetary gains. As a result, videos got a copyright strike for a small snippet of music from a big artist in it. Even if was playing from a passing car in the video. So YouTube is now revising the policy to make things fair and balance it out.
The short-term solution is to forbid copyright owners from reporting ‘very short or unintentional uses of music’. The blog posts suggest that content creators utilize their own audio library instead of putting in licensed content. Of course, if the penalty is unfair, creators can opt to appeal the copyright strike.
The new policy change will be in effect early to mid-September. Copyright owners who are unable to follow the new policy may have their manual copyright claiming access suspended. YouTube states that these changes may result in more blocked content in the near-term, but they feel it’s an important step toward striking the right balance over the long-term.
