For many of our writers, joining the EDMTunes family has been a life-changing experience. Even though we all love our job, that doesn’t mean there aren’t aspects of it that sometimes get under our skin. One of the biggest issues is that we don’t often get the chance to voice our true opinions, which is why we have come up with a new series called ‘EDMTunes Icebreakers’.
When writing about song releases or news stories, we often remain objective in order to leave our biases out of the articles. That being said, we wanted to give our writers a chance to speak their minds as well as give our readers a chance to get to know us better. Every other week, our editors will ask our writers a question and they will answer with a few sentences. A handful of these responses will then be compiled into an article for you to read and react to. We hope the ‘EDMTunes Icebreakers’ series gives you a glimpse into our personal music preferences and helps bridge the gap between reader and writer.
This week’s question is: What is your guilty pleasure track? (you know that one track that you secretly love, but would never tell your snobby friends about).
Dennis Tran:
Zedd – Clarity
Lord knows this song has been overplayed to death on the radio, but I will always love this song. The whole “Clarity” album was amazing, but of course the general public was only exposed to this one hit. Still, I will never get over this song.
Alana Piedl:
Krewella – Alive
I loved Krewella circa 2012. They had a grimy sound and experimented a lot with their music around that time. “Alive” was the anthem for one of the best summers of my life. Corny I know, but it’s sentimental for me.
Scott Lombardo:
Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Martin Garrix – Tremor
I’ll probably be fired after admitting this, but I’m sure I’m not the only one that still has some fond feelings for the occasional simple, big room insanity that used to be so popular in 2013 and 2014. Even though the track became synonymous with everything bad about EDM according to all of the EDM snobs, it will still fill almost any crowd full of unbridled energy and enthusiasm. Sometimes plain fun isn’t so terrible.
Terry Gotham:
Tiësto – Adagio For Strings
Because it’s been played/remixed for decades and is seen as such cheesy, commercial trance. But this video still reminds me what parties were and can be again.
Austin Goldman:
Sebastian Ingrosso, Tommy Trash, John Martin – Reload
While its omnipresence has been the butt of jokes in recent years, there’s a reason this track has stuck around. Combining Ingrosso’s unmatched musicality with Tommy Trash’s in-your-face sound, “Reload” is an anthem that gets even the most jaded festival-goer hyped. It’s fast, explosive, fun and still puts a smile on my face wherever I hear it.
Kyle Ackerman:
DVBBS & Borgeous – Tsunami
Maybe it’s the hometown bond we share or maybe it’s the pure simplicity of the song, but for some reason, every time it comes on, I immediately find myself bobbing my head and wishing I was drunkenly fist pumping in a crowd instead of driving home from work. Despite my general avoidance and dislike for the big-room sound, I’ve never quite been able to shake that feeling I get whenever it comes on. Hard-hitting bass with a catchy drop makes this song a sure fire winner for my guilty pleasure.
Nick Benner:
Hardwell – Spaceman
“Spaceman” is really catchy. I’ve never shared this with anyone, but I often find myself humming it in the shower. That being said, I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who has experienced this.
