Today, tech giant and name-known-around-the-world Apple confirmed the rumors that it’s acquiring the music recognition and identification app Shazam.

In the company’s official statement, they explained:

“We are thrilled that Shazam and its talented team will be joining Apple. Since the launch of the App Store, Shazam has consistently ranked as one of the most popular apps for iOS. Today, it’s used by hundreds of millions of people around the world, across multiple platforms. Apple Music and Shazam are a natural fit, sharing a passion for music discovery and delivering great music experiences to our users. We have exciting plans in store, and we look forward to combining with Shazam upon approval of today’s agreement.”

This is an interesting move on their part, especially the public acknowledgment of the acquisition to the general public.

Shazam, as the press release explains, is “one of the highest rated apps in the world and loved by hundreds of millions of users.” This acquisition comes as no surprise with the app’s growing success and popularity. Its capabilities to hear a song and identify its name and artist simply by listening is astounding – and there are many, many ways that its core technology could be utilized.
