The new kids on the block in the West Coast house and techno scene are a team making dark and heavy waves. It’s the artists behind Desert Hearts Black, a new subsidiary label of the iconic Desert Hearts Records. The imprint, founded by Desert Hearts co-founder Marbs and fellow dark beat enthusiast Evan Casey, highlights the deep, trippy sounds these artists have curated so iconically over the years. And now, their first EP has arrived: Torus.
Torus is the label’s first release, a collaborative EP from Marbs, Evan Casey and Rinzen out now. These three artists have proven to be powerhouses in their own right over the years, and we’re beyond thrilled to see them team up for this. The EP comes with three tracks of deep, driving techno bliss: “Torus”, “Helix” and “Ark”.
We found ourselves constantly immersed and enthralled with the levels to which this EP dives. “Ark” brought us on a sonic journey through what felt to be parallel universes, dipping into powerful basslines driving throughout. “Helix” takes us on a psychedelic journey with its echoing riffs into multidimensional worlds. And lastly, “Torus” particularly drew us in with deeply haunting melodies that took us back to tho nights on the Desert Hearts dancefloor for which this crew has become so legendary.
We’ve been huge fans of these three artists for years, and last year’s 4-hour B2B between Marbs and Evan Casey that brought in Sunday’s sunrise at Desert Hearts was iconic. Needless to say, this EP is only the start of some serious magic that Desert Hearts Black will be churning out.
The three artists are also continuing to make their rounds at venues across the country. Marbs will be bringing his dark sound to Taos Vortex at Meow Wolf this weekend, August 16-18. Evan Casey heads to Chicago this Saturday, and Rinzen makes his way to Washington, D.C. on September 1st for Sunday Love.
Give Torus a listen below to start your week off with a dark and heavy bang. We’re looking forward to what’s to come with this label ahead.
